My Art Story

Write up your art story: What do we mean when we say art? What is art to you? How does it fit in to your life? What do you want to learn about in this class?

When we say art, more often than not our minds are flooded with the many, many pictures, paintings, sculptures, etc. that we have seen throughout the years either in school or outside of it.  When we say art what we mean is something, a piece of work using various mediums by someone and labeled upon completion as a piece of artwork. For me, art is more than just the definition and studies of art I have done in previous school years.  Art is a way of life itself that comes in a bunch of shapes and forms, created by someone who has a passion for a particular form of expression.  To me art is the visual representation from hand to the final piece and all the work in between that it takes to get from the idea to the final piece.  Art is also, to me, music-singing or performing with instruments-, dancing and even things like cooking I find to be art as well. Also nature especially, nature is a beauty and plenty of art were based off of nature.

Growing up art had always surrounded me from friends, to just personal interests.  Even from a young age art has always been apart of my life a pretty big part in my development as well.  For both middle and high school, I ended up in art focused studies and by the time of reaching high school even got certifications in adobe photo-shop and passed my art regents giving me my CTE certification.  Although I may not always create often my passion for art has always been present and I suspect it will never go away!  From this class I hope to learn new interesting things that I didn’t explore or learn about during high school art history!

Write up your art story: What is art to you? How does it fit in to your life? What do you want to learn about in this class?

When most people think of art, they think of paintings and drawings. Most people consider art to be the creation of an image through the use of physical instruments, such as a paintbrush or a marker.

To me, art is an expression of creativity. To me, art is more than just drawing and painting. It can be photography and even writing. Photography is the art of snapshots and drawing with light. I know this from personal experience, having taken photography courses in Middle School.

Writing novels can also be an art. You have to select the right words to ‘paint an image’ in the readers’ minds. Writing ‘the house is yellow’ is like using a standard yellow paint while saying ‘the house was the color of a ripe sunflower engulfed in sunlight’ is like mixing yellow paint with a touch of orange to make it a more unique color. Art in my life is my creativity. It is the way in which I write a fictional story.

This is why I’d rather learn about artists who push the boundaries of what art actually is than learn about artists like Leonardo da Vinci. I’d be more interested in learning about artists like Willem de Kooning than artists like Vincent Van Gogh. I’d rather learn about flexible artists because my concept of art is flexible too.

An Art Story

How does one define art? It’s not safe to assume that everyone has the same concrete definition of something that is so expansive and subjective. According to dictionary.com, every English major’s best friend (alongside thesaurus.com), the definition of art is:

  1. the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

Looking it up might have been cheating, but while this definition holds intellectual substantiality and is transcendent, anyone can take a step back and criticize it. Dismay it even. My definition of art can differ drastically so from my neighbors definition. Who’s to say that art has to be beautiful, or hold a “more than ordinary significance”?

If I were to pigeonhole the definition of art, I would define it as a physical expression from the self. However, what this physical expression manifest’s itself into is the trickier (but best) part.

Art has always been a book in my lap and the touch of pen to paper, turning words into life. It is the only way I knew how to immerse myself in art at a young age, and the art that taught me that expression can be cathartic and inspirational.     As I grew older, I learned that I could immerse myself in art through what I wore and how I decorated my spaces. Reading, writing and expressing who I am through clothing and surrounding myself with Monet and Klimt and Van Gogh paintings. Through these expressions of art, I find that I not only understand life better through the eye of others but that I learn to understand myself better as well.

What I hope to gain from this class is a new definition of art and to have more of an intellectual grasping of artistic terms that help me understand important underlying meanings of artwork that I might’ve missed otherwise.

My Art Story

Art has no set definition. To some it can mean classical paintings, and to others it can mean a well choreographed dance. Personally, art to me is something crafted with both high amounts of skill and imagination. I notice art around me everywhere throughout my day to day schedule. On my commute to school, I admire the architecture of Manhattan: the skyscrapers. While on the train, I read some of the poems posted and I consider that to be art. When I see someone who’s nails match their handbag or their drink I find that to be artsy. My Pinterest boards are filled with home decor which I also consider to be art. I love the fact that art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Thus, you can create art and maybe some people will resonate with your art while others won’t, and that’s perfectly fine. I took a college level Printmaking class, and some of the students made these masterpieces that really changed my perspective on how art can be used to signify such larger themes.

I would like to learn about how art developed over time and maybe learn about some classical pieces and artists such as the Mona Lisa and Van Gogh. I also would like to know more about the influences behind contemporary art if there are any. I am thrilled to go to art museums (for free!) and expose myself to various types of art in order to see which ones resonate with me.

My History with Art

Aside from doodling random sketches of Spiderman and other superheroes in class since elementary school, art has always been an intrinsic passion of mine ever since I was introduced to comic books in 1st grade. I vividly remember the nights when I used to stay after my bedtime to read a stack of comics. As I read them, I remember that I was captivated by the illustrations and the details. Sometimes, I would re-read them as an excuse to look at the illustrations again; they were perfect. My imagination and creativity has definitely increased after my years of reading comics. The illustrations has opened a world of creativity I thought I would have never had. My drawing hobby slowly manifested throughout my childhood and I still love drawing during my free time.

Art, the word itself, can have a range of sub-categories. It is very hard to define it. First, it can describe the history of a certain piece. It can describe the culture of a piece. It can be in the form of lyrics (music), poetry, and literature. Or it can be totally different such as fashion and beautiful mathematical expressions such as the golden ratio. All of these sub-catergories have overlaps such that art is a form of expression through creativity or imagination.

Personally, I would love to explore surrealism in the 1900s. My favorite piece is by Salvador Dali, The Persistence of Memory. His works are just so bizarre and pleasing to look at. Anytime I look at his work, my mind gets convoluted with random thoughts and sometimes I get anxious!

I understand that art is all around us, from people singing and dancing in the subway to tall buildings and historic monuments and structures all around the city. I believe that anything that makes me feel something as soon as I see it or hear it, most of the time contains artistic background in a way. For most people when they hear art, they will most likely say something similar or the same, that art is emotive.

I have walked around the city, I have take pictures, seen people dancing in times square, heard people singing in the trains and visited museums. But all my life I have been surrounded by people, wherever I go there is people therefore since a very young age I found myself noticing the human body and their facial expressions as something artistic. For example if I see a beautiful woman with an 80’s outfit walking along the city I would like to photograph it because it makes me feel like she is bringing back time. If I see a child crying as its ice cream cone is melting I would also like to photograph it because it would make me feel empathy. If I see a muscular man I also find it artistic because it would portray strength and hard work. However if I see a couple embracing in nature under the moonlight and a million of stars and fire flies light the vast terrains I would most likely photograph it or better yet, even try to draw it (even though I do not know how to draw). I would take such actions because it would make me feel honest love and romance and beauty and serenity and aww and a bunch of feelings. Furthermore I find dance, music, and acting art too.

In class, I look forward to understanding where art comes from and fully comprehend what causes art, and how art has influenced our world today.

Blog Post #2: My Art Story

When we say art, we mean multiple things. We mean history, expression, and culture. Art is apart of our everyday lives whether we realize it or not. When we speak about art, we can speak about the powerful impact it has had in our past as well as our present. A discussion about art can be inexhaustible because of how vast and significant it is.

Art to me is a form of expression and therapy. I think every type of art can help people in their life. Whether it is writing, painting, drawing, creating fashion, music, and even reading. It can be relaxing and even a way of releasing a lot of emotions that aren’t so easy to express verbally. Art is also a form of education. The world is full fascinating history and we are able to know so many of these significant time periods and historical events through paintings and writing. These works of art allow history to come alive for us.

Art plays a big part in my life. I have always struggled with anxiety and expressing myself and art has always helped me with that. I have always taken comfort in writing, reading, and fashion. These forms of art have always been my own personal  form of therapy and they are incorporated in my everyday life.

I am really interested in learning about the renaissance era, the enlightenment era, and how religion played a role in a lot of the artwork that was seen during these time periods. I feel as though the art during these era’s represented a lot of the ideals that they believed in. I also feel as though they were even more unique and beautiful during these periods.

Some people believe art is just a painting or a drawing, others believe it’s music and the way music influences you and some people believe art is just subjective to what someone might find beautiful and that’s subjective in it’s own way too.

Art to me is how I define beauty. This means I find anime, music, paintings, nature and creative works to be a piece of art. Anime can be art if the writers and anime collaborate to mix the music and setting perfectly, music can be art with the way it influences my emotion, paintings are art to me when they have bright colors or have some hidden meaning behind and image, nature to me is the most beautiful art because it can’t be replicated and is the exact standard of what man first called beauty.

In this class I would like to focus on different forms of art than the ones listed. I want to know the history of Art and why certain artists chose their respective art forms.

This is my favorite piece of art, This was from the show Naruto Shippuden. People might not find this to be art, however I do. The way the animator draws the 2 opposing characters as they witnessed tragedy to become the same but separated. The eye change shows the severity of the emotional pain, that’s why it’s my favorite piece of art.

My Art Story

Art is primarily subjective to each individual. Essentially, it can consist of pretty much anything and everything you want. A piece of paper, a still moment, sounds, intangible experiences and feelings can all be considered art, if you truly wanted it to be.

Personally, art to me can be all of the things I have just listed. Anything that is beautiful to me, stands out and leaves me wanting a little bit more. Words that are curated in ways you couldn’t typically think of, places you’ve been that you just can’t get out of your head, sounds and pictures and everything else. Art is all around me, every single day. Art can architecturally stand out to me in the bed that I wake up in every morning. The interior design of the house I walk around in, the art of getting ready, putting on make-up and leaving the house. Stepping out into another start of the day, hearing the car horns of angry drivers, that is the art of New York City. It is from the minute I wake up to the minute I sleep – it is ultimately endless.

In this class, I want to be able to discover more forms of art that I haven’t already experienced. The history of art can help me dig a little bit deeper and find significance in every day life. I want to be able to appreciate the little details we might miss throughout what we believe to be our most ordinary times. It is beautiful everywhere I go and sometimes I may forget to take it all in.

Life Is A Work Of Art

Art is all around us. Whether it’s in newspapers, magazines, books, music, buildings; art is essential in the society we live in. Art is something I’m passionate about. Living in New York, I grew up surrounded by art and I’ve come to love and appreciate all different types of it. I started drawing at a young age, I’ve since then realized how powerful a weapon creativity can be. I believe everyone has the right to express themselves the way they feel like. When I draw I know there is no limit on how I want to express myself. Drawing is my way of showing the world who I am and what I’m capable of. I’ve always asked myself the question: who am I as an artist and is there anything about me that makes me different. The answer is yes. I see things in a unique perspective and it influences my inspiration for my artwork. I continue to work until my muse has used up every last bit of creative energy in my body. My drawings interpret my perspective and shed light on other different viewpoints. As a thriving artist, I want to continue to learn and be exposed to new forms of art. I hope to one-day change society’s’ mindset of how art is perceived and influenced.
