My Art Story

What is art? Art is complicated and has endless meanings. For example, the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. It is a questionable piece of work which is interpreted differently by everyone. There’s an old saying “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” To the average person this painting is seen as old piece of artwork that became famous overtime because of the image portrayed during the time period. Five centuries ago it was not common to showcase emotions through a painting and a smile was no exception. To me I see a new style of art, one that expresses creativity and possibilities. Art is subjective to the viewer. In art there is no wrong or right. As a famous man, Bob Ross, once said “We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.” These words of wisdom encourage people to not think of mistakes as a bad thing, but as a natural part of the work.  Art is about the journey to create a greater picture that is meaningful with emotion and personality.

My Art Story

Q: Write up your art story: What we mean when we say art? What is art to you? How does it fit in to your life? What do you want to learn about in this class?

A: I feel as if art is defined by ones self. If you were to have asked me this questions a few years ago, I would tell you something about boring paintings or drawings with little interest. I would also tell you that art is pointless and it would get you no where in life, I would make fun on art majors and the people I would see on the street with their art. I would associate art with being easy to do and no skill required.

What art to me is now is something beyond words, expression without expression, art is something unique to each person.  I believe an images or pictures can speak thousands of words, words in your own definition, words only you can describe, words only you can create. And the “you” in this instance is not only the Artist them selves, but the person observing and taking in this art.

The way art now fits into my life is through the way I dress, what I listen to, how I listen to things, and my mindset of everyday life. My new appreciation of art goes hand in hand with my outlook on life as I realize things arent as cut and dry and I used to look at it. Everything as a story and everything is designed for a reason. Art for product promotions, Art for self expression, Art for broadcasting a voice, many things.

What I want to learn from this class is that of a better understanding of art. I want to look at art in different lights to see how It influences my thinking and dressing

My Art Story

When art comes to my mind it draws either a blank image or a classical drawing iv’e seen before but never bothered to learn its deeper meaning. Art was never an active or even passive role in my life . It was just a reminder for one of those activities that I just wasent good at for I didn’t see any use of it at the time. It only took one year to completely change my view on art. Just randomly I had a picture in my mind of the most beautiful image I ever thought of. Without thought, I took a pencil and attempted to draw the most ugliest image known to mankind. Constantly over and over I would draw it not out pride or wanted to accomplish something, but to simply draw. I failed miserably of course but I learned a valuable lesson about art and its mysterious ways.

The pencil is a ruthless teacher and you can only learn not by what it says but by what monstrosity it created. It gave me a new perspective in life looking at images and pieces of artwork and working out, how they get from Step one to Step one hundred. Just like anything in life art for example can mean nothing, but one day whether by coincidence or not suddenly it appears as a substance that yearns to be used and expressed. Hopefully in this class ill learn what history was like for people living many decades or even centuries ago and what they depicted in their perceptive lenses. Also this is the first class of art I’ve taken since elementary school, so everyone needs to start somewhere!

Blog 1: How to Post

To be very honest with everyone who is sadly reading this I just learned how to do this in ten minutes out of anger and sheer determination. If you find this to be the most difficult thing to do last minute you may be right… But that’s why I’m here! To make the process as painless as can be.( Or if you just explored endlessly like i did and just randomly found this you can just skip this and do it yourself already.)

Step 1: Try and remember the account you made at the beginning of school that you would easily forget on the website on CUNY Academic Commons.

Step 2: Finally remember your information and type it in successfully to login to your CUNY Academic Commons account.

Step 2.5: (Just found out you need to join a group to do some stuff but no one wants me so its ok i guess ;-;.)

Step 3: Skip Step 2.5 if you are an unlucky boy.

Step 4: Look on the the black bar and try to find the white plus sign and click in the subsection post to begin your post of insanity.

Step 5: Make a funny title or the same title as everyone else in the class if you want… No pressure.

Step 6: Write whatever you want to share publicly into the description like Microsoft. Or instead just do your assigned homework..

Step 7: Now comes the hard part… Look to the black task bar on the left side and look intensively at Dashboard. Once your done being creepy look right of that and click media to add either music or pictures.

Step 8: Once you have put whatever song or picture in this post you have wanted select on the right side whichever category you belong to and create a tag relevant to the post you are publishing.

Step 9: You can finally publish your post and probably go to sleep because you did this last minute…

My Art Story

Write up your art story: What do we mean when we say art? What is art to you? How does it fit in to your life? What do you want to learn about in this class?

When we say art, more often than not our minds are flooded with the many, many pictures, paintings, sculptures, etc. that we have seen throughout the years either in school or outside of it.  When we say art what we mean is something, a piece of work using various mediums by someone and labeled upon completion as a piece of artwork. For me, art is more than just the definition and studies of art I have done in previous school years.  Art is a way of life itself that comes in a bunch of shapes and forms, created by someone who has a passion for a particular form of expression.  To me art is the visual representation from hand to the final piece and all the work in between that it takes to get from the idea to the final piece.  Art is also, to me, music-singing or performing with instruments-, dancing and even things like cooking I find to be art as well. Also nature especially, nature is a beauty and plenty of art were based off of nature.

Growing up art had always surrounded me from friends, to just personal interests.  Even from a young age art has always been apart of my life a pretty big part in my development as well.  For both middle and high school, I ended up in art focused studies and by the time of reaching high school even got certifications in adobe photo-shop and passed my art regents giving me my CTE certification.  Although I may not always create often my passion for art has always been present and I suspect it will never go away!  From this class I hope to learn new interesting things that I didn’t explore or learn about during high school art history!

My Art Story

I would love to think of my art story as lavish and whimsical as fairytales, but honestly, it comes up short. A couple of years ago when I went to the MET, I was taken away by the art and the beauty of each painting. The hours of work that went into each picture, sculpture, or set. But I didn’t recognize art for what it was until the friend I was with, who just finished a semester of art history, had insight on every artist or drawing, explaining the emotions behind the piece of work.

I appreciate art for what it is, meaning I get excited about museums and I love seeing artwork made by friends, but I wouldn’t say I have a passion for art or it’s my chosen outlet.  When I think of art, the first thing that comes to mind is the typical form of art. Meaning, a paper with some form of ink used to express one’s imagination, beliefs, or thoughts. However, in a sense, each person finds their own form of art. It’s simply finding a passion and using it as a form expression.

Above is a picture a childhood friend made. She is passionate about teaching as well as art. She often uses her art to express the emotional experiences that happen as a teacher and in her classroom.
