Blog Post #3: Pedagogy and Power

Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire was a book that criticizes the conventional education system. The banking model Freire proposed is that students only receive, file, and deposit what the teacher provides. The only thing students are learning to do is memorizing information that the teacher “deposits” in the students’ brains. The job of teachers is not so the students can memorize as much information as possible but to teach and get the students to think and analyze the work that is given. The problem the students have is never reach full understanding the knowledge because of the lack of context or they don’t have any reason to apply it to anything to appreciate its full value. Freire believes this turns students into better explain as “storage units” while the teachers are the depositing knowledge into, explaining the banking model title. Freire states this is a misguided system of education, where teachers are the oppressors and the students are the oppressed. This model of education greatly empowers the teacher and disempowers the student.

I keep trying to think of when (if) I’d ever experienced the banking model and  I can’t really seem to recall.

 

Blog Post 2: My Art Story

Write up your art story: What is art to you? How does it fit in to your life? What do you want to learn about in this class?

To me art means a lot of things. Art can be a way for me to express how I’m feeling, a stress relief, or even something to do when bored. When I was younger my favorite thing to do was go to a plaster gallery and paint ceramics. I think once my parents noticed, that was when I joined an art class. I ironically enough I did art in Zelda’s for a few years. Doing art in Zelda’s was always so structured but I learnt a lot from it. Even though its an art store they didn’t let us use the black paint and we had to mix brown and navy paint to create black. Small thing like that made Zelda’s worth it. Once I got to high school art became so much more to me. I loved it and went above and beyond what was required for my projects. I even had to stay in for lunch to finish them. This all lead my to take A.P art in my junior year of high school. Being in A.P art was like being let loose in a play ground. I was able to paint, draw, and carve whatever I wanted and everything was supplied to me. That year I lived in the art room. This all lead to me taking Art History in my senior year. All I can say is that my favorite time period was Ancient Egypt. Something about it, I just loved. Meanwhile I haven’t done serious art for maybe two years except for small things like color war banners and mascotsImage result for art

How to make a post on Cuny Academic Commons:

  1. Go to commons.gc.cuny/edu and login into your account
  2. Click on the “Sites” tab and select a specific site (In our case Fall 2018 Art 1010 at 11 AM)
  3. If you aren’t already added then, add yourself to the website (by pressing on a button on the left side of the screen that says “Add Me”)
  4. If you were already added to the group then just, click on the “+New” button on the top of the screen.
  5. Create a title (Usually about whatever is being discussed).
  6. Fill in the body with what you want to say.
  7. Select a category and add a tag (if you want). The category and tag section can be found on the bottom right side of the page. 
  8. If you want you can attach a file!
  9.  Hit the blue “Publish” button on the right when you are done.
